How the Butterfly and Stones Are Made
Burnout plus hot-fix crystal — two processes, and the stones are set after the cloth is burned, never burned in.
BR-11 starts as an 80% viscose / 20% nylon woven velvet, burned with a caustic paste so the butterfly wings open onto a sheer ground while the wing outlines and body stay in solid pile. Once the cloth is dyed and finished, pink and coral crystals are heat-set along the wing traces. The stone placement follows the burnout line, so the sparkle sits exactly where the velvet is dense enough to hold it.
That sequencing matters: crystals cannot be applied before dyeing, and they cannot survive the alkali bath. If a buyer wants a new layout, the screen and the stone template are built together.
Handfeel, Weight and Drape
At 170–200 GSM this is a light-to-mid velvet: heavy enough to hang in a clean column, light enough that a full-length piece does not fight the wearer. The pile is short and dense rather than plush, so the surface catches light in a narrow sheen instead of a broad bloom, and the burnout openings give the cloth a slight give across the repeat.
The burnout base is the same light-to-mid velvet hand as the rest of the range, but the stones add local weight: expect a slightly firmer panel where the crystal work is dense. For a fluid gown, keep the stone areas away from the bias; for a structured piece, the stones actually help the panel hold its shape.
Where Designers Use BR-11
African party dress. The core market: a celebration dress that has to read as expensive in a room with mixed lighting. Crystal over black velvet does that.
Evening and red-carpet. The stone density is high enough for a full-length piece; for a quieter version, use the stoned panel as a bodice and plain burnout for the skirt.
Stage and performance. Crystal catches stage light from a distance, which is why this design travels to performance wear.
Care, Finishing and Colour Fastness
Dry clean is the safest route for a finished garment. If you must wash, cold hand wash with a neutral detergent, no bleach, no enzyme wash, no tumble dry — heat collapses the pile, and the sheer areas distort before the pile does. Press on the reverse at low temperature through a cloth, never directly on the pile.
In production the two things to watch are needle marks on the sheer ground (use fine-gauge ballpoint needles) and seam grin at the burnout edge — overlock or bind the open areas rather than leaving a plain seam. Colour fastness to rubbing is grade 4 or better on the dyed grounds; test reports can travel with the swatch card.
On the rhinestone versions, add one rule: never press the stone face. Heat-set crystals are fixed at a controlled temperature and a hot iron will dull or lift them. Press from the reverse only, and specify a cool wash or dry clean with a short solvent cycle so the adhesive is not softened.

MOQ is 300 metres per colourway. Greige is held in stock, so once a colour is confirmed the lead time is about 15 working days plus shipping. This is a rhinestone programme, so price is quoted per design and stone density rather than off a list — send the colourway, quantity and the effect you want and we will come back with a costed offer. Swatch cards go out by courier: send your address and the grounds you want to see and we will quote the freight with the card. Custom colour matching to your Pantone or lab dip is available above the MOQ; custom pattern development (OEM/ODM) is quoted separately, because a burn-out screen has to be built for the new layout.

Is burnout velvet the same as devore?
Yes. Burnout, devore and devore are the same process under different trade names - a caustic paste burns away the cellulosic fibre (viscose, cotton) and leaves the synthetic fibre (nylon, polyester) standing. The sheer areas here are open cloth, not a printed illusion.
Will the sheer areas tear or ladder?
The open ground is nylon mesh, so it resists runs far better than a knitted sheer. It still needs a proper finish: fine-gauge ballpoint needles in sewing, and overlocked or bound edges rather than a plain seam.
