How the Abstract Branch Is Burned

A painterly branch motif with an editorial, contemporary register — burnout as surface design, not as a floral print.

BR-04 is an 80% viscose / 20% nylon woven velvet, burned with a caustic paste in an abstract branch layout. Where the paste lands, the viscose pile is destroyed and washed away and the nylon ground stays open; where it does not, the pile keeps its full lustre. The motif is deliberately irregular — strokes of different width, branches that break and resume — so the cloth reads as a drawn surface rather than a repeating wallpaper.

Seven ready colourways make this the widest palette in the BR range, which matters when a designer wants the same hand across a collection: one design, seven grounds, one set of pattern blocks.

Handfeel, Weight and Drape

At 170–200 GSM this is a light-to-mid velvet: heavy enough to hang in a clean column, light enough that a full-length piece does not fight the wearer. The pile is short and dense rather than plush, so the surface catches light in a narrow sheen instead of a broad bloom, and the burnout openings give the cloth a slight give across the repeat.

Irregular burnout gives an uneven distribution of pile and mesh, which is exactly what makes the drape interesting: the cloth falls with a slight variation instead of a uniform curtain. It is also forgiving on the bias — the abstract layout hides the seam shift that a geometric repeat would expose.

Where Designers Use BR-04

Designer and editorial pieces. This is the burnout for labels that want the material to carry the idea rather than a recognisable flower. Capes, cocoon coats, asymmetric dresses.

Layering. Because the ground is genuinely open, BR-04 works as a sheer layer over a solid dress or a contrast slip — the abstract strokes read as shadow on the layer beneath.

Dress and abaya. Cut plain and let the surface do the work; a simple A-line or a straight abaya in one of the deeper grounds is the most reliable seller.

Care, Finishing and Colour Fastness

Dry clean is the safest route for a finished garment. If you must wash, cold hand wash with a neutral detergent, no bleach, no enzyme wash, no tumble dry — heat collapses the pile, and the sheer areas distort before the pile does. Press on the reverse at low temperature through a cloth, never directly on the pile.

In production the two things to watch are needle marks on the sheer ground (use fine-gauge ballpoint needles) and seam grin at the burnout edge — overlock or bind the open areas rather than leaving a plain seam. Colour fastness to rubbing is grade 4 or better on the dyed grounds; test reports can travel with the swatch card.

Sampling, MOQ and Lead Time

MOQ is 300 metres per colourway. Greige is held in stock, so once a colour is confirmed the lead time is about 15 working days plus shipping. The factory-direct FOB anchor for this range starts around US$3.10/m; exact price depends on quantity and packing, and stock-clearing lots can go keener. Swatch cards go out by courier: send your address and the grounds you want to see and we will quote the freight with the card. Custom colour matching to your Pantone or lab dip is available above the MOQ; custom pattern development (OEM/ODM) is quoted separately, because a burn-out screen has to be built for the new layout.

Questions Buyers Ask

What is BR-04 Abstract Branch?

BR-04 is an 80% viscose 20% nylon burnout/devore velvet, 170-200 GSM and about 140cm wide. Modern painterly abstract branches; the widest color choice in the library (seven). Available in: Seven ready colorways.

What is the MOQ, lead time and price?

MOQ 300 meters per colorway; greige is stocked so lead time is about 15 working days. The factory-direct FOB anchor starts around US$3.10/m for this range; send quantity for an exact price.

Can I order other colors or a custom pattern?

Yes, this design can be re-colored to your card and we welcome OEM/ODM custom patterns with a separate custom MOQ.

Is burnout velvet the same as devore?

Yes. Burnout, devore and devore are the same process under different trade names - a caustic paste burns away the cellulosic fibre (viscose, cotton) and leaves the synthetic fibre (nylon, polyester) standing. The sheer areas here are open cloth, not a printed illusion.

Will the sheer areas tear or ladder?

The open ground is nylon mesh, so it resists runs far better than a knitted sheer. It still needs a proper finish: fine-gauge ballpoint needles in sewing, and overlocked or bound edges rather than a plain seam.

Can it be washed at home?

Dry clean is safest for a finished garment. If you wash, cold hand wash with neutral detergent, no bleach, no enzyme wash and no tumble dry, then dry flat in shade and press on the reverse through a cloth.
