How the Paisley Damask Is Burned
Dense ornamental paisley in gold tone — the ceremonial language of the Horn of Africa, built in burnout.
BR-05 is an 80% viscose / 20% nylon woven velvet burned with a caustic paste in a dense paisley-damask layout. Because the motif is close-packed, the cloth carries more solid pile and less open ground than the floral designs: the gold-tone surface dominates and the sheer work reads as fine openwork between the scrolls, which is the effect dirac and toub buyers look for.
Gold and champagne are the two grounds we hold. Both are dyed after the burn-out, so the sheer areas take a slightly deeper tone than the pile — at a distance the cloth looks like a solid gold velvet with light coming through it, and only up close do you see the openwork.
Handfeel, Weight and Drape
At 170–200 GSM this is a light-to-mid velvet: heavy enough to hang in a clean column, light enough that a full-length piece does not fight the wearer. The pile is short and dense rather than plush, so the surface catches light in a narrow sheen instead of a broad bloom, and the burnout openings give the cloth a slight give across the repeat.
Denser than the florals, BR-05 has more body: it holds a pleat, carries beading and embroidery without buckling, and hangs in a firm column for a floor-length dirac. It is still an 170–200 GSM cloth, so it does not turn into a costume — but treat it as a structured velvet rather than a fluid one, and line it where the sheer shows against skin.
Where Designers Use BR-05
Somali dirac and fransawi. The most requested version: floor-length, gold or champagne, worn over a solid underslip. The dense scrollwork reads formal in a majlis and photographs well at weddings.
Sudanese toub. The cloth takes the wide wrap and the openwork keeps a full-length toub from becoming heavy in heat.
Bridal and ceremonial. Gold-on-sheer is the safe ceremonial register across the region, and the density means beaded or stone trims sit on solid pile rather than on mesh.
Care, Finishing and Colour Fastness
Dry clean is the safest route for a finished garment. If you must wash, cold hand wash with a neutral detergent, no bleach, no enzyme wash, no tumble dry — heat collapses the pile, and the sheer areas distort before the pile does. Press on the reverse at low temperature through a cloth, never directly on the pile.
In production the two things to watch are needle marks on the sheer ground (use fine-gauge ballpoint needles) and seam grin at the burnout edge — overlock or bind the open areas rather than leaving a plain seam. Colour fastness to rubbing is grade 4 or better on the dyed grounds; test reports can travel with the swatch card.
Sampling, MOQ and Lead Time
MOQ is 300 metres per colourway. Greige is held in stock, so once a colour is confirmed the lead time is about 15 working days plus shipping. The factory-direct FOB anchor for this range starts around US$3.20/m; exact price depends on quantity and packing, and stock-clearing lots can go keener. Swatch cards go out by courier: send your address and the grounds you want to see and we will quote the freight with the card. Custom colour matching to your Pantone or lab dip is available above the MOQ; custom pattern development (OEM/ODM) is quoted separately, because a burn-out screen has to be built for the new layout.
Recommended End Use

Questions Buyers Ask
What is BR-05 Paisley Damask Gold?
BR-05 is an 80% viscose 20% nylon burnout/devore velvet, 170-200 GSM and about 140cm wide. Ornate gold-toned paisley-damask; ceremonial luxury for dirac and bridal. Available in: Gold / champagne.
What is the MOQ, lead time and price?
MOQ 300 meters per colorway; greige is stocked so lead time is about 15 working days. The factory-direct FOB anchor starts around US$3.20/m for this range; send quantity for an exact price.
Can I order other colors or a custom pattern?
Yes, this design can be re-colored to your card and we welcome OEM/ODM custom patterns with a separate custom MOQ.
Is burnout velvet the same as devore?
Yes. Burnout, devore and devore are the same process under different trade names - a caustic paste burns away the cellulosic fibre (viscose, cotton) and leaves the synthetic fibre (nylon, polyester) standing. The sheer areas here are open cloth, not a printed illusion.
Will the sheer areas tear or ladder?
The open ground is nylon mesh, so it resists runs far better than a knitted sheer. It still needs a proper finish: fine-gauge ballpoint needles in sewing, and overlocked or bound edges rather than a plain seam.
Can it be washed at home?
Dry clean is safest for a finished garment. If you wash, cold hand wash with neutral detergent, no bleach, no enzyme wash and no tumble dry, then dry flat in shade and press on the reverse through a cloth.
